Impression № 040c: Avatar #5 – Medusa

Matthew Cox gives us a little more insight into his inspiration:

In Heartthrobs and Avatars, 2011, I am transporting this technique to a new place using iconic heartthrobs from Pop culture such as Snow White and David Bowie and avatars from Eastern religion and Greek mythology such as Krishna and Minotaur. The possible visual imagery is rich, vast and exciting. This new move has also given me an opportunity to physically move out of the rectangle of the x-ray by extending the embroidery upward and outside of the frame.

Matthew Cox is a Philadelphia- based artist who embraces and joins a variety of media to produce several thematic series of work. A 2008 recipient of the Pew Charitable Trusts Fellowship in Painting, Cox studied at the Parsons School of Design in New York and Otis/Parsons in Los Angeles. He exhibits his work nationally and is featured in many prominent collections. He is represented by Jonathan Ferrara Gallery in New Orleans [], Pentimenti Gallery in Philadelphia [] and Packer /Schopf Gallery in Chicago [].

Young men catch snakes for their own good,
rescue what slithered in wide circuit
through ragweed and muck,
retained in glass eight-by-four cubed
with a centimeter-deep pond.
Coiled coffin kings, sterile as pharaoh carapaces,
swallow lab mice dropped in deus ex machina, lethargic
without adrenaline spice and palpitating heart.
A sunset of rosehips and orange petals,
lemon custard with meringue clouds
–all this is sealed out.
Tea leaves float in a cooling cup.
Every so often a patch
of gold creeps its way between shutters,
taunts this underworld
of shoe leather, plastic bags,
and Pine-Sol, pungent, stinging a flagellant tongue.
Slave of retreating sun, the liquid gold
slithers away, fading in degrees,
until only a warm spot
remains on the floor.
Color this diminutive mouse life
egg-shell white.
An overhead bulb glows
with the brightness
of a thousand maggots.
